Concepts are mental constructs. We can understand concepts as constructs in thought, helpful in grasping possibilities in lived experience, informing our conduct of life. In this sense, concepts have a rich actuality in the historical world and exploring that expands our potential agency. In addition, as an abstract idea, concept can refer to a mental entity with unique characteristics, not a concept of something, but the concept of the concept, which raises many profound philosophical problems. Here we study concepts and their uses, more than the concept of the concept. We concentrate primarily on their historical development and uses, especially in the context of the theory and practice of self-formation.
